Walnut MIDI is a custom MIDI controller encased in handcrafted American walnut.

High Tech and Handcrafted
This was the first of several projects combining high-tech components with handcrafted natural materials.
As a universal MIDI-over-USB device, this handsome block of wood can be used to control anything from music equalizers to system settings (volume, brightness, etc.) to any external device with a USB host port!
.
Well, what can it do?
For demonstration purposes, I wired up controls to 3D Wow, my "trippy" Perlin Noise visualizer. By adjusting any of the five knobs, two sliders, or the horizontal touch pad, you can control the visualization in surprising ways.

Evolution
Walnut MIDI evolved a fair bit from concept, to prototype, to final product. I'll leave you with the highlights below!
While building my first, laser-cut prototype, I accidentally fried my soft potentiometer (touch sensor pad). Hence the memorial in the middle image...
Tech: Arduino Micro, C++, p5.js (3D Wow), Rhinoceros 3D (CAD for laser cutting), rotary, slide, and soft potentiometers
